Citizenship

GCSE Citizenship Studies is a core subject studied by all students and is examined at the end of Year 11.

The qualification aims to develop positive and proactive citizens who have the knowledge and understanding to improve their communities locally, nationally and globally. From understanding the history of Britain as a diverse nation to learning about the role of the United Nations, from analysing the influence of modern media to evaluating different methods of crime reduction: students will gain a better grasp of how they can play a significant role in the democratic process and understanding of the world around them. The qualification also endeavours to develop communication, negotiation and teamwork skills, all of which are essential to future employers.

Parents and Carers can greatly support students’ learning by encouraging students to listen to or watch the news and discuss key issues of the day with them. When doing so it is vital that both sides of any argument are explored and compared as this is a key skill within the subject.

GCSE (Years 9 – 11)

We are unusual as a subject in that we begin our GCSE at the start of Year 9. Within the course, we study 5 “themes” or topic areas. We follow the Edexcel GCSE Citizenship Studies (1CS0/01) specification. One of the 5 themes is the Citizenship Action Project in which students work together in small groups on a Citizenship issue that is of particular interest to them. The Project culminates in the Fram Citizenship Fair in the summer term of Year 10 which the whole school attends.

Assessments are carried out on average once per half-term in class, using exam-style questions and building exam skills. In addition, every half-term a “Curriculum Issues” piece is sent via Show My Homework with a subsequent knowledge checking and comprehension quiz online. Finally, at the end of Year 10 and again early in Year 11, students will sit formal practice examinations in the subject.
